Description |
This collection consists of various paper writs, mostly dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a few from the 16th centuries. These writs relate mainly to transactions of the Horsburgh family, with the estate, although a large proportion of the documents refer to other families connected by marriage, especially the family of Turnbull of Know. The bulk of the material comprises dispositions, bonds, discharges, assignations and legal proceedings in connection with debt. There is also a large collection of estate and household vouchers.
The Poll Tax Rolls for the town and parish of Selkirk, and the Parish of Ettrick, 1694-1695, which are amongst the papers, are of particular interest, as are four testamentary documents prior to 1681, which supply deficiencies in the Peeblesshire Commissariot record which is not extant until 1681. The early parchment titles to the estate, usually found in a collection such as this, are missing, but the collection as a whole provides useful information on family and local history. |
