Arrangement Much of the collection had previously been arranged and numbered (sometimes in red ink) in accordance with inventories compiled in 1910-11 (GD172/2883). Whilst this earlier arrangement has strongly influenced the present arrangement of the papers, they have been completely re-numbered and should be cited by the reference number GD172 and the piece number in this inventory.
Publication note Information about the Henderson and Spittal families is published in 'History of Inverkeithing and Rosyth' by Revd William Stephen (1921).
Archival history The Henderson of Fordell papers were presented to the Scottish Record Office by Sir John Hampden Mercer-Henderson, 8th Earl of Buckinghamshire, in 1953. Fordell Castle and estate, which the Earl had inherited from his mother, were sold by him in 1954.
