history |
These papers relate to the family of Hume of Polwarth, later Lord Polwarth and Earl of Marchmont. Through the marriage of Diana (1733-1827), daughter of Hugh, 3rd and last earl of Marchmont (1708-1794), to Walter Scott of Harden (1724-1793), the title of Lord Polwarth passed to their son, Hugh Scott (1758-1841), whose claim to the barony of Polwarth was allowed by the House of Lords in 1835. |

Baillie - Marchmont 17 July 1711 Jerviswood - Marchmont 17 October 1717 |
Archival history |
Hugh, 3rd earl of Marchmont, left no surviving male issue, and, in his testament, bequeathed his extensive library and papers to George Rose, his executor. His son, Sir G.H. Rose, sold them back to H.F. Scott, Lord Polwarth, in 1851, and they have remained with the family since then. On receipt of the collection by NRS, the condition of some of the documents was poor, especially the diplomatic correspondence of Alexander, 2nd earl of Marchmont, who was sent as ambassador to Denmark, 1715-19, and to the Congress of Cambray, 1719-25. Much of this section of the collection is printed in the five volumes of the "Historical Manuscripts Commission, Polwarth", series. An appendix gives the documents that are apparently missing, though these are probably concealed as enclosures somewhere in the collection.
On the other hand, much of the correspondence of Hugh, 3rd earl of Marchmont, was sold at Sotheby's on 25 April 1910. All of the letters of Sarah, duchess of Marlborough, and Alexander Pope were sold then, and most of the Bolingbroke, Chesterfield, Argyll and Gellert letters have also gone. A list of the missing correspondence, printed in Rose, "A Selection from the papers of the Earls of Marchmont", is given in another appendix. Some of the correspondence of Patrick, earl of Marchmont, is also missing and listed in this appendix. Either it was sold along with the rest, or it is in a missing letterbook.
The third appendix gives a list of other Marchmont material either in other collections in NRS or elsewhere.
Note - The letters of Sarah, duchess of Marlborough were resold about 1969 in Sotheby's to Mr James Osborne and are in his catalogue in Yale University Library. They have been published several times in form of extracts but without precise source (information from Professor Henry Snyder, University of Kansas.) |
