history |
At the beginning of the 15th century Cally and other lands in the parish of Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire, belonged to Sir John Stewart of Girthon. His daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, married firstly (1412) Alexander Stewart of Torbane and secondly (c.1430) Donald Lennox, who is said to have been a natural son of Duncan, earl of Lennox. She died after 1471, having made over her lands to her younger son, William Lennox, MA, who appears to have been a graduate of St Andrews University. William Lennox purchased Kirkennan and other lands in the parish of Buittle from Lord Monypenny in 1485 and thereby became involved in litigation in Scotland and France. He died in 1516 and was succeeded by his son, also called William, who married Margaret Chalmer. Their son William, who died in 1576, married Margaret Gordon, and had a son, John, and a daughter, Jonet, who married (1575) Andrew Lennox of Plunton. John's two younger sons by his marriage with Agnes Maclellan, married (1607) Andrew Lennox's two younger daughters and co-heiresses. The eldest son, John Lennox, married (1612) Marion Lidderdale, daughter of James Lidderdale of Isle. John's son, Alexander, married firstly (1639) Marion Gordon, eldest daughter of William Gordon of Penninghame, and secondly (1643) Margaret Lamb, relict of William Gordon of Kirkconnell. Alexander Lennox of Cally died in November 1657, leaving an only daughter, Anna Lennox, married to Richard Murray, younger, of Broughton. In 1661 Richard Murray obtained a crown charter of the Cally estates on the resignation of John Lennox of Plunton, heir male of tailzie and provision of Alexander Lennox.
Broughton and other lands in the parish of Whithorn, Wigtownshire, belonged (c.1508-13) to Mungo Murray of Broughton, who is believed to have been a younger son of Cuthbert Murray of Cockpool. Both he and his son, Patrick, were dead by 1515. The earliest Murray document in the collection relates to Mungo's grandson, John Murray of Broughton (d.1556), elsewhere said to be 'homo voluptati deditus', who dilapidated his estates. The collection contains nothing referring to John's son, David, and his grandson, Alexander. George Murray of Broughton who succeeded to the estate before 1595 obtained a crown charter in 1602 erecting it into the barony of Broughton. His son, John, married (1630) Marion, daughter of Sir Richard Murray of Cockpool. The eldest son of this marriage, Richard Murray, acquired the Cally estates, following his marriage to Anna Lennox, and also estates in county Donegal, by conveyance from James Murray, second earl of Annandale, though his right was only made good after protracted litigation.
Richard Murray of Broughton died in 1690 and on the death of his eldest son, John, in 1705, the estates were inherited by the second son, Alexander, who acquired further lands in Kirkcudbrightshire. He married (1726) Lady Euphemia Stewart, daughter of the 5th earl of Galloway, and his son, James Murray, who succeeded in 1750, married (1752) his cousin, Lady Catherine Stewart, daughter of the 6th earl. James Murray, founder of the burgh of Gatehouse of Fleet and sometime MP and Receiver-General for Scotland, died in 1799, leaving no legitimate issue. In 1797 he entailed his estates to his natural children, with reversion to his wife's nephew, later Lieut. General Sir William Stewart of Cumloden. On the death of James, Murray's only surviving child, Alexander Murray, MP, in 1845, the estates passed under the entail to Sir William Stewart's grandson, Horatio Granville Stewart, who in the following year assumed by royal licence the additional surname and arms of Murray of Broughton, Cally and Killybegs. He died without issue in 1904 and his cousin, Col. William Baillie of Ilston Grange, Leics., son of Sir William Stewart's daughter, succeeded in terms of the entail, assuming the additional surname of Murray. His son, Major Frederick David Murray-Baillie, inherited the Broughton and Cally estates in 1906 but later sold the former, retaining the superiority. He died on 21 December 1924 and was succeeded by his daughter, the present owner. |
Arrangement |
In cataloguing the collection the old arrangement, corresponding to a 19th century inventory (no. 1453), was disregarded and the documents were rearranged according to general subjects. The additional documents deposited after the completion of the main part of the present inventory constitute sections VII, IX, X and XI). The correspondence (apart from estate letters) has been bound into twelve volumes (section VIII). For convenience of reference and storage all plans have been incorporated in the Register House Plans series and are listed in an appendix to this inventory. The material deposited in 1969-70, 1976 and 1979 includes 20th century estate records and 19th and 20th century titles to lands. |
