INSURANCE RECORDS SURVEY
Church of Scotland Fire Insurance Trust, Limited
Report
1. Registered as the Free Church of Scotland Fire Insurance Trust, Limited, in 1888. Changed title to United Free Church of Scotland Fire Insurance Trust, Limited, in 1901, and to present title in 1930
2. The Trust handles the fire insurance of church property only, and operates a considerable reinsurance business. The Trust insures properties throughout Scotland, with interests in all types and sizes of parish. The business of the Trust is managed by Messrs. Scott, Peden, & Co., Chartered Accountants, 7 Wemyss Place, Edinburgh EH3 6DJ, where the surviving records are now held in a storage basement area, c/o Mr. W.L.R. Scott.
3. The records of the Trust provide a continuous documentation of the extent, growth or decline, and value of churches, church properties, and church furnishings throughout Scotland. The policy registers are the most valuable of the business records, giving details of the parish insured, its buildings, fittings, heating, and sums insured. The registers are also useful for their note of any previous insurance on buildings insured by the Trust; this information indicates the distribution of church insurances in the market prior to the formation of the Trust. The registers are complemented by the endorsation books, giving details of extra or altered risks, and including a summary of the guarantee account held with the Royal Exchange Assurance. The shareholding register is divided between listings of confirmations (in favour of executors of shareholders), shareholders, and share transfers. This type of information is also summarised in the minute books which also include full analyses of investments, claims, early reinsurance agreements, and some technical discussion of the lighting and heating of parish kirks.
4. The records of the Trust are of permanent value both for the history of church insurance and for the history of church building, property values, equipment, and maintenance. Apart from certain gaps in the older accounting series, the records of the Trust have wide scope and continuity. To ensure the retention and preservation of its records, the managers of the Trust are now considering the deposit of their records in a major library or archive in Edinburgh, and to this end the survey has recommended contact with Mr. John Bates, Secretary of the National Register of Archives (Scotland) A further copy of the subject-index of records has been sent to Mr. Bates.
5. Mr. Scott holds the committee minute books of the Cowdenbeath Public House Society, Limited, for which he acted as liquidator. These records, which cover the period 1901 to 1946, are a useful record of local philanthropy and temperance in Fife. Mr. Scott is also considering deposit of these records.
