The Mure family held the lands of Caldwell from at least the early 17th century, and their kinsmen, the Mures of Glanderston, acquired their lands around the same time. These families were united in 1710 when William, 4th laird of Glanderston, succeeded to the Caldwell estates. By the late 19th century, the Mures held over 1500 acres in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire at an annual value of £7245 and were they were the Deputy-Lieutenants of these counties. William Mure (1830-1880) became a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Scots Guards and saw service in South Africa during the eigth Kaffir War of 1851-3 and in Russia during the Crimean War of 1853-6. He was latterly also Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire from 1874 until 1880. At time of his death, his eldest son , also William (born 17 Jan 1870) was just 9. The son went on to emulate his father by becoming a Lieutenant-Colonel, this time in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died on 14 June 1912. |
