The Scottish Ancestry Research Society was suggested and set up by the Secretary of State for Scotland, Thomas Johnston (1941-1945) with the objective of strengthening bonds across the British Commonwealth. He got the idea after meeting a lady from Utah who was researching Mormon ancestors from parish records in war-time storage at Borthwick Castle. The Society was conceived as a non-profit making but self-supporting organisation to assist persons of Scottish birth or descent to trace facts about their ancestors in Scotland. It employed a team of searchers and was directed by a Council representing Scottish historians, central and local archives and libraries. The Society eventually folded in April 1998. |
