The Royal Scottish Forestry Society was founded in 1854 as the Scottish Arboricultural Society. (The English Arboricultural Society was not established until 1881). In 1887 it was granted a Royal charter and became the Royal Scottish Arboricultural Society, and in 1930 it changed its name once again to the Royal Scottish Forestry Society. At a general meeting in 1906 local committees were sanctioned. The Society was established to represent foresters throughout the country in matters of trade, education and government policy. It has been active in advising and reporting to government committees which were established at various times to consider the future of forestry and woodlands management and the effects on profitability and productivity that education in forestry might have. It issues diplomas and certificates each year to successful students of its courses. It has published its transactions since 1858, first under the title 'Scottish Forestry Journal', and from 1947 as 'Scottish Forestry'. |
