The previous owners, Mr and Mrs K Kelshall, Sheffield, had made use of GD1/1209/1 in their book 'Scottish Lifestyle 300 years ago' (Edinburgh, 1986). GD1/1209/1-7 are closely related to other Marchmont MSS in NAS: see in particular GD158, and also (for odd volumes) GD1/648-651. Significant cross-references to specific volumes are supplied in the catalogue. GD1/1209/8-9 relate to the personal affairs of the Glasgow tobacco merchant John Gordon of Aikenhead, for whom Aieknhead House was built c. 1806 (see E Williamson, A Riches and M Higs, 'The Buildings of Scotland: Glasgow' (Harmondsworth, 1990), pp. 530-531). Entries in GD1/1209/9 tend to confirm the suggestion there that David Hamilton did work for Gordon at that time. A few 20th century records of the Gordons of Aikenhead are noted in the National Register of Archives (Scotland) survey no 1687. |
