The Scottish Association of Discharged Prisoners' Aid Societies was founded on 29 November 1954. As its name implies, the Association aimed to co-ordinate the activities of the local aid societies in Scotland, all of which endeavoured to promote the welfare of discharged prisoners in the hope that they would not re-offend. The long-established local societies were based in the four cities, also in Greenock and Perth; Glasgow was the oldest one, dating back to 1856. The Scottish Association was a voluntary body but did receive funding from the Scottish prison administration, part of the Scottish Home (and Health) Department. The Department and other bodies such as the After Care Council were also entitled to be represented at the Association's meetings. Support from welfare officers and a welfare fund, help with finding employment, clothing grants, and accommodation initiatives, some in conjunction with other welfare organisations, were the main means used by the Association to help prisoners and their families. |
