Description |
The papers relate to the art-collecting activities of Sir Robert Dick (1773-1849) in Italy during his sojourn there in the 1840s. Other papers relate to the estate or business affairs of earlier members of the family, notably: Sir William Dick of Braid (1580-1655), reputedly the richest merchant in Edinburgh in his day, and the above Sir James who had the current Prestonfield House built to the design of Sir William Bruce in 1687.
On the Cunynghame side, some of the estate papers relate to the lairds of Lambroughton; other Cunyngham families, also from Ayrshire, appear in the legal section.

The Dick Cunynghame family descended from the marriage of Janet Dick, daughter of Sir James Dick of Prestonfield (1643-1728), to Sir William Cunyngham of Caprington, in c.1696; on Sir James' death, Janet's second son, William, succeeded to Sir James' entailed estates of Prestonfield and Corstorphine. |
