The SCTA Memorial Club is thought to be the first commercial travellers' club in Britain. Dedicated to travellers who lost their lives during the First and Second World War, the formation of the Club was inspired by the wish of the Edinburgh, Leith and District Branch of the Association to have a social and business base of its own. The Club nonetheless was run from the start as a Scottish-wide organisation with many country members numbered amongst its ranks. Premises, a four-storey Georgian mansion in Manor Place, Edinburgh, were acquired in 1948 and opened in 1950. The Club was run by committee, had its own staff and operated quite independently from the Scottish Commercial Travellers' Association and Friendly Society (see GD1/1033 and GD412). From a membership of around 750 in the early 1950s, the Club eventually came to an end due to lack of funds during 1973. |
