The medical inspection of school children became compulsory in Scotland under the Education (Scotland) Act of 1908. The medical officers appointed to this work formed the Association of School Medical Officers for Scotland in 1911. The Association was a forum for the discussion of common problems and also for the specific aim of promoting school hygience. In addition, the interests of school dentists - who begin to appear as members around 1920 - increased to the extent that from 1947 the Association styled itself as the Association of School Medical and Dental officers of Scotland. It came to an end in 1967 when it was absorbed into the Society of Medical Officers of Health, now the Society of Community Medicine. |
