Aichesonshaven or Newhaven, known later as Morrisonshaven, is thought to have been used since the early 12th century. By the early 17th century the monks of Holyrood were using the harbour for the transport of coal and salt. The harbour of Morrisonshaven was built in 1835 by Robert Stevenson and was known as one of the safest harbours on the Firth of Forth. It was used for the transport of salt, bricks and fireclay products, stone, peatmoss and pitwood. William Thomson, senior and junior, the grandfather and father of James Thomson, were both pilot seamen at Morrisonshaven. The harbour was declared closed to shipping in 1937. |
