Description |
These files relate mainly to the operations of United Kingdom Departments in Scotland. The Office (Board, later Ministry) of Works had general responsibility for government buildings and particular responsibility for the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, as well as ancient monuments and the 'historic apartments' of Edinburgh Castle and Holyroodhouse. Some ministries (Food, Munitions and National Service) were only in existence during and immediately after World War I. There are also files relating to Scottish non-departmental bodies, including the Royal Scottish Museum (originally under the UK Science and Art Department), the National Museum of Antiquities and National Galleries (under the Board of Manufactures) and the National Library of Scotland.
