In 1866 Christian MacLagan bought a piece of ground in Stirling on which she erected a territorial church (mission), known as Marykirk Church, connected to the Free Church of Scotland. Around this time the Free congregation of Stirling North also aquired a plot of land in Cowane Street and built a school thereupon. The North congregation also used the school building for mission purposes. These two missions were near each other geographically, but differences and difficulties occured in the management of the two charges. A proposal was made to unite the two missions, but a dispute ensued between Christian MacLagan and the North Church, which resulted in Miss MacLagan repossessing the MaryKirk building and giving it to the Church of Scotland, c 1878. The Marykirk Free congregation, having lost its building united with the Cowane Street mission; the united charge being known as Stirling, West Free Church. |
