Kilmarnock, Henderson Free Church originated with a Secession congregation who had a church on the Gallowsknowe built in 1772. The members quarrelled with the New Light Burgher Synod and erected what became known as Henderson Church in 1817. They first adhered to the Burgher Presbytery of Glasgow, and then briefly to the Church of Scotland (1839-1843), before coming out at the Disruption. The congregation then passed to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, as Kilmarnock Henderson. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock and, until the abolition of synods in 1993, in the synod of Ayr. |
