Greenock, St Columba's Gaelic Free Church originated at the Disruption, when almost all of the members of the existing established church adhered to the Free Church. There was a general decline of the Gaelic-speaking population of the town, and the congregation suffered a loss of members in 1893 owing to the Declaratory Act. It transferred to the United Free Church, however, and later to the Church of Scotland, as Greenock Gaelic, and united with Greenock West as Greenock The Old Kirk in 1996. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Greenock and the synod of Clydesdale. |
