Description |
The records detailed in this catalogue represent the transmission made from the General Assembly Tolbooth Library in September, 1959, together with subsequent accessions. Church records already in the custody of the Scottish Record Office before that date, contained in collections of private papers, etc., have not been included.
As many United Free Churches agreed to union with the established Church in 1929 and consequently altered their designations, it is essential that the two catalogues CH2 and CH3 should be consulted as pre-1929 and post-1929 records of a particular church may be split. Where a direct cross-reference is possible in such cases e.g. Longforgan Free Church and Invergowrie East Church of Scotland, this is inserted in the appropriate entry in each repertory.
When cataloguing Free and other Church records, the designations of individual churches were taken from the record volumes and, therefore, relate to the period covered by the volumes. The designations generally appear in chronological order and explanatory notes are given for essential guidance only. |
