The Individual letters are indorsed with the names of the correspondents, dates of the letters, and in many cases, a note of the contents by Wodrow himself, [cf Robert Baillie, `Letters and Journals' (referred to hereafter as `Letters and Journals'), Bannatyne Club, Edinburgh, 184ff. 1-2, vol. Letter from Mr. [James] Brotherstones, (minister of Glencairn,) to Mr. Robert Douglas, minister at Edinburgh, relating feelings of writer's presbytery (Penpont) on authority of General Assembly at St. Andrews and Dundee. 2. Letter (from Mr. Robert Douglas? to [Roger Boyle, 1st earl of Orrery] lord Broghill), begging him to apologise to Protector for the writer's lack of ability to go to London. Edin., 23 May 1654.

160. Letter, unsigned, to Mr. Robert Wyllie, minister in Yaroue, with news of affair at court of James VII. London, 10 Oct. 1686. The letters numbered 160, 164-6, 168-70, and 173 are unsigned and appear with no. 172 to be in the same hand. No.172 is signed J. C., and, from a reference to lord A's intention to take part in the next campaign, the writer is probably Mr. Cranstoun, who accompanied John, earl of Angus, son of James, 2nd marquess of Douglas, abroad (`Douglas Book', IV/382). He is conjecturally identified with John Cranstoun, later minister of Ancrum, who graduated in 1685 and was ordained minister of Crailing in 1692 (`Fasti').
