Coal, ironstone, limestone and fireclay had been mined in the Lochgelly estate owned by the Earl of Minto for many years until in 1850, a partnership who had taken over the lease of the minterals took the name Lochgelly Iron Company. After the development of a local railway and more concentrated efforts on coal mining the company took the name The Lochgelly Iron and Coal Company Ltd.in 1872. The company was put into voluntary liquidation in 1946 when the coal industry was nationalised. |
