The Wemyss family had always been predominant landowners in and around East Fife and there had been coal mined in their lands since the 17th century. The Wemys Coal Company was formed and chaired by Randolph ErskineWemyss in 1894. It's aim was to exploit the coal found in his estate and subsequently a new railway and dock were built connecting the estate and Methil. The escalation of coal production in the area led to a new working village at Wemyss being built, designed by Alexander Tod. The company was put into voluntary liquidation in 1946 when the coal industry was nationalised. |
