The Caledonian Steam Packet Company Limited was incorporated in May 1889 under the Companies Acts 1862 to 1886 to operate the shipping services of the Caledonian Railway, and became a subsidiary of the London Midland and Scottish Railway on the amalgamation therewith of the Caledonian Railway as from 1 July 1923.
In 1936 and 1937 the Glasgow and South Western Railway's Clyde steamers, which also came under the control of the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, were taken over by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company. The ex-LNER Clyde steamers were also transferred by the British Transport Commission to the Caledonian Steam Packet Company in November 1951 and the Loch Lomond and Kyleakin Ferry Services in May 1957.
Since 1969 the Caledonian Steam Packet Company and David MacBrayne Ltd have operated under the Scottish Transport Group (which was created by the Transport Act, 1968) and became Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd in 1973. |
