The Carmyllie Railway was opened as a private mineral railway in 1854 by the Earl of Dalhousie and was worked by the Scottish North Eastern Railway as from 1 February 1864. The line was purchased by and vested in the Scottish North Eastern Railway as from 19 June 1865 under the Scottish North Eastern (Purchase of Carmyllie Railway) Act (28 Vic. c.83) of that date.
The Scottish North Eastern Railway was amalgamated with the Caledonian Railway by the Caledonian and Scottish North Eastern Railways Amalgamation Act, 1866.
The Caledonian Railway's interest in the Carmyllie Railway was transferred to and vested in the Caledonian Railway and the North British Railway jointly in equal proportions as from 1 February 1880 under the North British Railway, Dundee and Arbroath Joint Line Act (42 & 43 Vic. c.155) of 21 July 1879 as part of the Dundee and Arbroath Joint Line, under the management of the Dundee and Arbroath Joint Line Committee.
The Caledonian Railway became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway as from 1 July 1923 under the North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1923 dated 29 June 1923, and the North British Railway became part of the London and North Eastern Railway as from 1 January 1923 under the North Eastern, Eastern and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30 December 1922.
The Joint Line Committee was vested in the British Transport Commission from 1 January 1948 under the Transport Act, 1947.
The Carmyllie Railway was authorised to be worked as a Light Railway by Order of the Light Railway Commissioners dated 6 August 1898 in pursuance of the Light Railways Act of 1896. |
