A barony in Scotland consisted of land granted by Royal Charter 'in liberam baroniam'. The baron had the right to hold courts dealing with both civil and criminal matters. The Heritable Jurisdictions Act of 1747 reduced, but did not abolish, the powers of barons to hold courts within their own lands. Only a very few records survive of these courts in Argyll. |
