James Campbell was born on 3 November 1827 and trained at the Edinburgh Normal Institution during 1849-50. He was appointed schoolmaster at Helmsdale in April 1852 and held that post until his retirement in 1881. In addition to his duties as schoolmaster he held the posts of registrar of births, deaths and marriages (1855-1913), inspector and collector of the poor (1867-1913), clerk to the Helmsdale Drainage and Water Supply sub-committee and sanitary inspector (1867-91) and commanding officer of Golspie battery of the 1st Sutherland Artillery Volunteers (1869-73). |
