Description |
Diaries and papers of Lieutenant, later Captain, Major and Lieutenant Colonel James Whitton, 21st Royal North British Fusiliers, later Royal Scots Fusiliers. Born on 20 February 1841, he took up a military career in 1857.
The diaries record letters sent and received. Some of the latter, with other papers such as press cuttings, programmes for concerts and rifle meetings, were assiduously pasted in at appropriate pages of the diaries. This practice fell away, however, and other original papers found loose have been arranged in bundles by reference to dates given in the diaries, and these are noted below. The letters include a large number from his mother, Agnes Whitton of 9 Dudhope Terrace, Dundee.
The diaries are written in a crisp style with often graphic description of events and places visited. The entries for the periods of service in India and Burma convey a good impression of military and social life of the time. |
