Description |
Robert Craigie, Advocate, became Lord Advocate in 1742 and Lord President of the Court of Session in 1754. This group (c. 170 items) of his in-letters and a few miscellaneous legal papers covers the period 1742-56, with a few earlier items from 1710. The most generally interesting letters are those of John, 4th Marquis of Tweeddale, Secretary of State for Scotland, 1742-6, and of Andrew Mitchell, Under-Secretary, 1741-7, to Craigie after his appointment as Lord Advocate in 1742, particularly those dealing with the '45 Rising. The letters dealing with other than national affairs are concerned with the private legal matters of some noble families, particularly the Earl of Kinnoull. Other correspondents (represented by one or more letters) include Lord President Forbes, the Earl of Morton, the Duke of Buccleuch, and the Earl of Findlater and Seafield. |
