Description |
The larger part of these documents is concerned with the investigation by the Douglas side into the French dimension of the Douglas Cause. Nos. 1-12 are the correspondence of Lady Jane Douglas - possibly survivors of that mentioned in GD1/155/1/35 and discuss her and her husband's health and financial problems.
The remaining letters and enclosures (nos. 13-143) date from after 1760 and concern the investigation, concentrating on the question of Archibald Douglas's origins. They provide much interesting information on procedural matters, on the taking of testimony in the case and the testimony itself, and on the possibility that Archibald Douglas was in fact a French imposter. There are also insinuations against the honour of Douglas's opponents in the cause, and even that of Hugh Dalrymple is brought into question (see, for example, nos. 24-34). Also included among these documents are lists of witnesses for the pursuers produced by the Hamilton lawyer Andrew Stuart. (nos. 98, 128, 131, 136). |

The papers are those sent to Charles Brown, WS, in Edinburgh from lawyers working on behalf of Archibald Douglas in Paris and London where they sought evidence to support his claim as legitimate heir to the estate of the Duke of Douglas. They were gifted to Register House in 1951 by J J Bonar W.S., 15 Hill Street, Edinburgh. |
