In 1911, when the idea of a Scottish national association of net manufacturers was first put forward, there were eleven firms making nets within the country. Messrs J and W Stuart, Musselburgh, were the largest.
The Association of Net Manufacturers was to be formed between commercial enterprises, be they firms, companies or persons, with the purpose of regulating the net manufacturing trade in Scotland so as to remove 'unnatural competition', to control prices and to improve foreign trade links. However, a price list could not be agreed in 1911 and it was only on herring drift nets, the largest aspect of the net making market, where there was any agreement between the larger firms and the smaller, independent traders.
Following the failure to form an Association in 1911, the proposals were again put forward in 1916, 1920 and 1925 but it was not until 1945 that an Association was finally formed. |
