The Revd Alexander Ewing (1762-1822) was the eldest son of the Revd Alexander Ewing, teacher of mathematics, and his wife Jacobina of Edinburgh. He was also a brother of Greville Ewing (1767-1841) of Edinburgh, gospel minister, who moved to Glasgow following his transfer to the Congregational Church. The Revd Alexander Ewing moved to Bermuda to teach school in 1781, and married firstly Sarah Fowle (1763-1807) and then Mary Ann Baston (d ? 1782, nee Outerbridge), and had two sons, Thomas and Alexander. He moved to the Church of England shortly after his arrival from Scotland as a Presbyterian, and subsequently took orders. He was ordained in London, and returned to Bermuda to take up the living of the lower parishes of Hamilton, Smiths, Devonshire and Pembroke. |
