John was the second son of James Ritchie, a fisherman from St Quivox Parish in Ayrshire. Matriculating in 1798, he went on to become a dissenting minister, firstly of the anti-burgher congregation at Clerk's Lane in Kilmarnock between 1813 and 1825. He then translated to the secession congregation of Potterow in Edinburgh with which he is particularly associated (popularly known as 'Potterrow John'), where he remained until 1849. He died on 15 May 1861, aged 80. |
