GD1/1349/2/1-5 regard a Mrs Hanstein who married her German army husband just before the First World War and moved to Germany. He died in combat in 1915, and she apppears to have remarried there but returned to the UK after the Second World War. These papers mainly relate to her attempts to get back monies confiscated by the government under the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1939. Most of the papers stop in the 1950s but the last paper of 1976 is the account of charge and discharge from 1974 - 1976 when the Trust was closed (Mrs Hanstein died in November 1974). |

These papers were amongst the holdings of James Campbell (died January 2004 aged 67). They probably came from the premises of Melville & Lindesay WS, whose business ceased c1982 (and was taken over in effect by Gillespie Macandrew WS). Mr Campbell was allowed by the firm when it closed to take what papers he wanted, and over the years sold a lot of them. Before his death he still possessed a residue, and decided to dipose of them via NAS, mostly by gift. The papers in GD1/1349 were part of that residue, and his widow seems to have been happy to gift them (and other papers which we despatched to other archive offices during 2004-05) - see files NAS4/V3/71.1 and NAS4/AB3/540.1 for details. |
