The history of Lenzie can be traced back to 1842 when it was opened has 'Campsie Junction' by Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway to serve the town of Kirkintilloch. The Edinburgh and Glasgow Campsie branch ran from the main line at Lenzie 6ΒΌ miles from Glasgow to Lennoxtown. The North British Railway company took over in 1865 and under them the line was used to cross link other lines such has the Kelvin Valley railway, to provide direct routes for coal from central Scotland to the Clyde without passing through Glasgow. The actual site of Lenzie Station grew, the building of houses near to the station began in 1848 for Glasgow commuters. The E&G encouraged the building of villas in the area by offering 'villa tickets' (the offer of free season tickets). When the North British Railway took over in 1865 the station was renamed 'Lenzie'. |
