In 1971, a decision was made to build a new runway at Turnhouse Airport, Edinburgh. The airport was struggling with a runway that was too short for the latest commercial jets and the 1956 wooden terminal building was handling ten times the passenger volume for which it was designed. The Edinburgh City Council was reluctant to spend the money required to rectify this situation but in 1971 the airport was acquired by the British Airports Authority. The Authority made available the funds to embark on the biggest development to be seen since the airport's inception. This new development was not welcomed by local residents and various protests followed, with support being given to the idea of a single Edinburgh/Glasgow airport being built. |
