The Campbells of Craignish are well-known for the early eighteenth century document, 'Manuscript History of Craignish', which is an account tracing the Campbells of Craignish from their founder in 1130 to Ronald Roy, who died in 1639, and beyond. By that point they were already known as a major branch of the Campbell family and were major landowners in the Argyll area. The Campbells of Lagganlochan were less well known but marked their descent from Ronald Roy in the seventeenth century. What is known is that by the nineteenth century both families had fallen on harder times. Craignish Castle had been sold by 1830 and the Lagganlochan Campbells had been declared bankrupt at the end of the eighteenth century. The papers date from the late ninteenth/early twentieth century, and were compiled by several different family members. |
