John Hamilton Dunn (born 2 Nov 1829), writer in Edinburgh, began as an Engrossing Clerk to the Office of the Register of Hornings in 1848, before earning a commission as Clerk to the Office of the Register of Hornings, Inhibitions and Adjudications on 1 Mar 1866. On 8 Feb 1869 he was appointed substitute to the Deputy Keeper of the Great Seal in Scotland, to fulfill the necessary obligations when the Deputy Keeper was absent. On 29 Oct 1870 he was made Deputy Keeper of the Register of Hornings, Inhibitions and Adjudications, which post he kept until he retired on 2 Nov 1894.
Dunn married Sarah Frances Fraser (born 1860) on 15 Aug 1883 at St Mark's Unitarian Church, Castle Terrace, Edinburgh. Sarah was the daughter of Andrew Fraser, printer and former editor of the 'Edinburgh Medical Journal' (then deceased), and Alison Thomson Fraser. Her brother, Murray Fraser, became a process engraver in Australia after emigrating there in 1886, and served as president of the Graphic Arts Services Association of Australia. Sarah was an artist, and sketches, mostly of golfers, drawn by her in St Andrews in the 1890s are included in the collection.
Dunn died in Edinburgh on 26 Jun 1899, and his wife was sole executrix of the estate. Although John did not have any children, notes received with the collection suggest Sarah had a daughter after John's decease, who became Mrs Gerakiss. |
