Rev. Robert Small, the son of a weaver, was born into a staunch Seceder family, his parents belonging to Balgedie (Burgher) Church, and he later studied at St. Andrew's University. He was ordained in Southend in 1863 and, as well as serving as a minister, served for a time as Examiner in Mathematics for United Presbyterian Scholarships. He died in 1905. |

These letters and papers were found in a two-volume set of the 'History of the Congregations of the United Presbyterian Church, 1733-1900,' by Rev. Robert Small, purchased for the National Archives of Scotland Library from the Christian Bookshop, Forrest Road, Edinburgh, in February 1999. They have been gifted by the bookseller. |
