The 'chancellor' who despatched the letter seems to be George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly, who was Chancellor of Scotland, from about 12 November 1497 to no later than 8 June 1501 , when he died. The recipient must be Sir James Haldane of Gleneagles, laird thereof from 1495 to 1503. He was briefly captain of Dunbar Castle. Master John Chisholm, who is mentioned in the letter, is presumably related to the three Chisholms who were bishops of Dunblane from 1487-1573. |
Archival history |
This letter appears to be a stray from the charter chest of the Haldanes of Gleneagles collection GD198. It was bought from the dealer JLM Gulley, London, March 1998. Mr Gulley had bought it not long before in a lot containing the remains of the stock of a London dealer, Marcham, who was killed in the Second World War. The letter was then offered at the Cavendish Philatelic Auctions, Derby, sale on 13 March 1998, but was not sold and it was subsequently acquired by the National Archives of Scotland. |
