The photographs in this album (GD1/1208/1) were taken by Alexander McCallum Webster (1838-1879), of the Indian Civil Service, around Invercreran House, Argyllshire. (Invercreran is about halfway between Oban and Fort William.) 'Mac' Webster (as he was known to his family) is reputed to have made the camera which he used to take the photos and to have taken the photos in 1866 while staying at Invercreran with his grandmother, Mrs Margaret McCallum (1786-1871). The photographer himself appears on photo 2 of the album; his grandmother on photo 7. She was born a Kennedy of Lianachan (near Spean Bridge), and married Alexander McCallum (1760-1821), from Loch Nell, near Oban, a wealthy businessman in Jamaica. |
