Description |
These letters were written to one Hector MacDonald and his wife Jessie in Australia by his family in Scotland between 1849 and 1869. Hector had emigrated with his wife and young family in 1849 and was employed in farming near Goulburn, New South Wales and later in running a public house. Full of news about friends and family in Gairloch, Ross and Cromarty, the letters also contain some references to emigration from the neighbourhood and to the success or failure of the potato crop and herring fishing. |

'Pigeon Holes of Memory: The Life & Times of Dr John MacKenzie' by Christina Byam-Shaw has references to Murdo MacDonald, who was the second largest tenant on the estate; and to James Kennedy, senior, who was gardener to MacKenzie of Gairloch. |
Archival history |
The letters were kept in a tin box until about 1920, when a member of the family was about to visit Scotland. He took the letters with him, and passed them on to a relative in the MacLennan family. |
