Description |
This collection of correspondence and related papers comprises letters of James Basley, a butler to various families in succession in Edinburgh and England and of other family members, notably the relations of Elisabeth Weir, his wife.Elisabeth Weir worked as a lady's maid before her marriage and her father and brothers were gardeners or nurserymen in Fife, Edinburgh, Wales and London. Their letters make only general reference to their work. Four letters from Andrew Basley, James' brother, describing his purchase and running of a newsagent's and stationer's shop in Kirkgate, Leith in 1868 are of some interest. |
