This letter book was deposited as a stray volume with some kirk session records, but there are few letters with an ecclesiastical connection. The business correspondence shows that Thomas Chalmers first operated Loch Mill, close to the centre of Linlithgow, as a joint partner with Alexander Cowan & Co, Valleyfield Mill, Penicuik (for whose records see GD311). It seems that this partnership took effect in 1855, but was dissolved in October 1859, whereupon Chalmers became the sole owner. Briefly the Mill was called Loch Mill Paper Co, but later in the 19th century operated as Thomas Chalmers and Sons. Dissolved company files (BT2/7183,13795) show that with effect from 1 July 1909 Thomas Chalmers and Sons became a limited company, under that name. It ceased trading with effect from 12 February 1966, but its affairs were taken over by the Inveresk Paper Co Ltd, the parent company of a paper-making concern (some of the latter's records are at GD269). |
