The Baillies of Bagbie and Hardington in the parish of Roberton, Lanarkshire, bought Culterallers, in the parish of Culter [Coulter], Lanarkshire, from Menzies of Culterallers in 1771. The Baillies were a cadet branch of the Baillies of Lamington, as is described in 'Lives of the Baillies' by James William Baillie of Culterallers (Edinburgh, 1872). Various other papers relating to both the Menzies and the Baillies of Culterallers can be found in the collection Bertram of Nisbet Papers (SRO ref: GD5/10-17; 387-422; 455-476; and 534-539). Nisbet is also in the parish of Culter and Euphame Nisbet married George Baillie of Hardington, the father of James Baillie, writer in Edinburgh and purchaser of Culterallers. His (6) brothers travelled widely (settling in both India and America) and were the authors of most of the correspondence preserved in this collection. |
