Col James Brunton served in the East India Company during the late 18th century. His correspondence includes references to both the Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790-1792) and the Vellore Mutiny (1806). He retired to Britain in 1807, living first at Venlaw near Peebles and then in Dawlish, Devon. After his death his brother, the Rev Dr Alexander Brunton, was appointed executor to his British estate and was involved in a long and complicated process to make sense of his brother's finances, which included those of the deceased Major Thomas Gordon for whom James had been acting executor. The correspondence from 1870 onwards largely relates to these complicated affairs. The Rev Dr Alexander Brunton became Professor of Oriental Languages at Edinburgh University, and papers relating to the publication of his books (bundles 49 and 50) have been brought into this collection - they were previously catalogued at GD314/51. |
