The Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway Company was incorporated under an Act of 26 May 1826. It was one of the last railways built for purely horse operation in Scotland, and was opened in 1831. The EDR was purchased by the North British Railway Company under an Act of 21 July 1845. There is a useful account of sources for the line's history in D W Martin, 'The Impact of the Public Railway in Scotland, 1808-1850: A Bibliographical Commentary' (Library Association Fellowship thesis, 1984: SRO Library ref TR.1.16) |
