Description |
This collection of postmark books was purchased from Alex Kirkwood and Son, engravers, Edinburgh, through the good offices of Mr D Jefferies and Mr B Auckland, Edinburgh. After the abolition of mileage stamps by the Post Office in 1828, the system of circular date stamps was started and the contract for the manufacture of these was awarded to Alexander Kirkwood. These volumes contain the maker's impressions of date stamps, seals and other stamps issued to post offices throughout Scotland. At first the stamps were only issued to the busier offices but their use spread to smaller post offices as their level of business rose. The volumes also contain impressions of stamps repaired by Kirkwood. |
