George Monck (1608-70), soldier, was initially a Royalist in the Civil War period but sided with Parliament in 1646. He served with Cromwell in Scotland during 1650 and was commander-in-chief of the country in 1651 and 1654-60. He was instrumental in effecting the Restoration of Charles II to the throne and as a reward was appointed first Duke of Albemarle. |
