Rev Henry Paton (1855-1942) was originally a bookbinder and subsequently became a minister of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland. He is best known for his publications, among which are several Viking Club, Scottish Record Society and Scottish History Society publications, including 'The Lyon in Mourning', as well as 'The Clan Campbell' and 'A History of Peebleshire'. He was an inspector for the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts and was involved in the editing of the 'Register of the Privy Council of Scotland'. Along with his son, H M Paton, he was also a genealogist and some of his research notes which he left to his son are among the latter's collection, GD439. This small group of papers is thought to have come from the sale of his library in Peebles in 1988. |
