Description |
The papers in this collection relate to the teinds of the prebendary of Vogrie or Loquhariot in Borthwick parish, Midlothian. The prebendary had belonged to the collegiate church of Crichton, founded by William, Lord Crichton, in 1449, but as part of the transfer of Church property to laymen during the Reformation period, it passed into the hands of the Bannatyne of Newhall family. As the papers reveal, the Bannatynes fell into dispute among themselves and with other landowners over the possession of these teinds. (It should be noted that although the surname 'Bannatyne' or 'Ballantyne' is interchangeable in these documents, Bannatyne is used in the list as the standard form. The spelling of place-names has also been modernised.) |
